Something I’ve been consciously trying to focus on is staying still (to a degree).
I have a painfully annoying tendency to jump around. Part of it is curiosity. The other part, is my fight or flight. When things don’t go right (just once) OR it gets tough, I’m thinking of what the next best alternative is.
For example:
I got let go from the startup I was working at last November. Immediately seeing as Meta and other HUGE companies were firing so many people in marketing/comms, there were no jobs. I decided to pivot into Instructional Design. An attempt to give myself better odds at landing something. Okay, to be fair, it’s not that far of a stretch and I’m actually interested in it. I’ve been teaching for an online boot camp for 1.5 years and my background is in building content/communications — majority of the work IDs do.
After doing some research, I found most job descriptions mentioned certificate programs…off I went. I enrolled in the Unversity of Washington’s 6-month long remote program. Short review: It was okay (post for another day).
By week 3 of the second 7-week session came around, I had a FT role and had more than enough freelance work to keep me busy. I dropped the program (after learning I could get a refund).
The humor in this?
All of the work is in copy and content management — exactly what I was doing before.
Taking it as a sign, I’ve decided to sit my butt down. My focus is on marketing and communications work. Still broad enough to where the types of projects I take on can vary significantly, but narrow enough to where I have some blinders on (avoid distractions).
Here’s to hoping I learn patience.
But really, I think there’s something to be gained from mastering (or getting above average) at something. Professionally and personally. With mastery comes confidence — life-altering. From there, in my opinion, the stage is set for almost anything.
